The following trophies will be presented by the adjudicator on behalf of the Portsmouth Music Festival Brass Section:

The Incorporated Society of Musicians’ Award
for the best communicated performance (ages 13 to 18 years).

The Woods Trophy
for the most promising performance (ages 12 & under).

The Maurice André Trophy
for the performer with the all-round best tone.

The Denegri Cup
will be presented at the adjudicator’s discretion for the most inspiring teacher or performer.

Important guidance notes for entries:

  1. Please ensure that all sections of the entry form are completed and include details of the repertoire to be performed.
  2. Details of performance dates, times and venue will be sent by email.
  3. Teachers or parents are welcome to assist with tuning, up to and including Grade 6 (if graded category) or Age 14 (if age category).
  4. A CD player will be provided for soloists who wish to use a backing track.
  5. Where a class is described as “Unaccompanied”, the music played must have been written or arranged to be played unaccompanied.
  6. Where a class is described as “Any other musical style” the music played could be Jazz, Pop, Film, Folk etc.
  7. You may enter as many classes for each grade classification as you wish, but can only enter each class ONCE only.

Solo classes are arranged by age group which broadly align across national Key Stages with each class further divided by ability into Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced. The following equivalent grades should be used as a guide to which section participants should enter:

Foundation                         Pre-Grade 1 – Grade 2

Intermediate                      Grade 3 – Grade 5

Advanced                           Grade 6 – Grade 8

The Open Class is open to entries from anyone who is performing at post Grade 8 standard.
